From challenge to solution

01
Challenge

Problem / challenge

The plantation is located in a mountainous region characterised by cold nights, rapidly changing weather and a high risk of spring frost. The grower also needed an effective way to control weeds, keep the fruit cleaner and organise the plantation for efficient day-to-day maintenance and harvesting.

02
Goal

Project goal

The objective was to create a more manageable strawberry plantation, protect the plants during critical temperature drops and reduce weed pressure without restricting access to the crop.

03
Solution

Agrimpex solution

The plantation was established on raised, single-row beds prepared with the support of an AGRIMPEX mulching machine. Black 50 g/m² mulching agrotextile was used around the plants to suppress weeds and separate the fruit from the soil.

During periods of spring temperature decline, the plants were additionally protected with AGRIMPEX Agroflex 25 g/m² crop cover. The flexible covering provided an additional protective layer while adapting to the developing plants.

04
Result

Effect / result

The system created a more orderly plantation that was easier to maintain and better prepared for the local climate. According to the grower’s field observations, Agroflex significantly reduced frost-related damage when temperatures in April dropped to approximately -5°C to -6°C.

The black mulching agrotextile also supported weed control and helped keep the harvested strawberries cleaner by limiting direct contact with the soil.

Detailed case study

Growing strawberries in demanding mountain conditions

The strawberry plantation in Ustjanowa is located in the Bieszczady Mountains, where spring production is strongly affected by cold nights, rapid temperature changes and the risk of late frost. These conditions require a protection system that supports both plant development and the daily organisation of the plantation.

The project combined two complementary AGRIMPEX solutions: black mulching agrotextile installed around the plants and a seasonal crop cover used during periods of increased weather risk.

Preparing an orderly plantation system

The plantation was established on raised, single-row beds. This arrangement improved access to the plants and made maintenance and harvesting more convenient.

Black 50 g/m² mulching agrotextile was used to limit weed growth, reduce direct contact between the fruit and the soil and improve the overall appearance of the plantation. The material also helped create clearly defined planting rows.

Protection during critical spring nights

AGRIMPEX Agroflex 25 g/m² was used when temperatures dropped in spring. The material created an additional protective layer above the plants while remaining flexible enough to adapt to the developing crop.

According to observations from the plantation, the cover provided valuable protection during nights when temperatures fell to approximately –5°C to –6°C.

Combining mulching and crop protection

The implementation shows the benefits of using different materials as parts of one production system. The mulching agrotextile supported permanent weed control and plantation hygiene, while the crop cover could be introduced temporarily when weather conditions required additional protection.

This flexible approach allowed the grower to respond to local conditions without relying on a single material for every function.

Practical value of the project

The final plantation was more orderly, easier to maintain and better prepared for the specific climate of the Bieszczady region. The project also provides a clear example of how AGRIMPEX products can be combined according to the crop, production stage and expected weather risk.
